EOSC-CSN

Designing the thematic node that integrates citizen science into the EOSC Federation.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

During this period, the governance structure, technical architecture, and framework for creating a thematic node specializing in citizen participation within this major European data infrastructure will be defined.

EOSC-CSN (EOSC Citizen Science Node) is a six-month preparatory project aimed at formally integrating citizen science into the EOSC (European Open Science Cloud) Federation.

The EOSC Federation connects multiple interoperable ‘Nodes’ (which may be thematic, geographical or institutional). All of these are interconnected using the rules of the EOSC Interoperability Framework and the technical capabilities of the EU Central Node (EOSC EU Node), based on the official reference manual (EOSC Federation Handbook).

It is within this context that EOSC Gravity (June 2025 – December 2027) emerges, a coordination project funded by the European Horizon Europe programme (GA 101188045). Its mission is to consolidate the entire EOSC data ecosystem and guide its transition towards a new model of governance and sustainable funding from 2027 onwards.

PROJECT FEATURES

Type of project: European

Duration: June 2025 – November 2026

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Value Proposition: Articulate how the node bridges traditional research and citizen-generated data, with FAIR compliance ensured.

MVN Requirements: Strategic alignment with the EOSC Federation Handbook. All Minimum Viable Node requirements — technical and legal — addressed.

Governance Model: A multi-level governance representing the diverse CS community. Existing platforms orchestrated within an EOSC-compatible framework.

Technical Roadmap: Integration of the RIECS core services with EOSC: AAI proxy, FAIR validation, ARGO monitoring, APEL accounting.

Training Curriculum: A training matrix for unaffiliated researchers, fully aligned with the EOSC Academy and integrated into the EOSC Knowledge Hub.

Showcase: A public event demonstrating live integration of citizen science projects into the EOSC Federation through the node.

THE ROLE OF IBERCIVIS

Ibercivis is putting together a group of 10–15 experts to review and validate the governance, technical and operational plan for the EOSC Citizen Science Node.

Anyone working in citizen science, the EOSC, FAIR data, participatory research, research infrastructure governance or related fields is welcome to apply. Affiliation with a university or research institution is not required.

WHAT WE DO

2–3 online meetings of around 90 minutes each between June and August 2026, plus reviewing documents, amounting to 1–2 days’ work of reading and providing feedback.
