Atrium
Alternatives for a transition to sustainable, reusable and recyclable construction products.
About the project
ATRIUM will also promote public engagement and involvement to bring the EU closer to citizens and to local urban and rural areas through communication, local initiatives and a range of activities.
ATRIUM is a Horizon Europe project that promotes bio-based, reusable and recyclable materials for the construction sector, with 14 organisations from 7 countries.
The Spanish partners are Fundación Ibercivis, together with Fundación AITIIP (the coordinator), Fundación CIRCE, Tecnopackaging and Moses Productos.
The construction sector is vital for both the economy and the environment: it accounts for 9% of European GDP and provides more than 18 million jobs.
ATRIUM aims to reduce the sector’s environmental impact by combining natural fibres (such as hemp), bioplastics and mycelium-based biotechnologies to produce intermediate biocomposites that can be built into construction products such as flooring and acoustic panels.
The project promotes the circular economy and the bioeconomy, developing efficient technologies and working with key stakeholders to certify these new bio-based products and gain their acceptance.
Project objectives
– Develop 4 bio-based, recycled and/or natural materials as base materials to scale up the production of 4 intermediate products or biocomposites, and validate their performance in 5 consumer-oriented end products.
– Validate innovative processing technologies that can be scaled up to process novel biocomposites for the 4 consumer-oriented applications.
– Develop and validate 5 consumer-oriented end products based on the cascading use of biomass.
– Demonstrate ATRIUM’s solutions in 5 value chains and validate them at 3 demo sites, including Vienna, Zaragoza and Israel.
– Develop a set of recommendations for pre-standardisation and/or regulatory action on recyclable/reusable bio-based construction materials, integrating sustainable-by-design considerations and criteria, including safety and user experience, into the 5 construction solutions to be installed at the 3 demo sites.
– Communicate, disseminate and promote the exploitation of ATRIUM’s results.
The role of Ibercivis
Fundación Ibercivis organises and coordinates the Zaragoza demo site, working with citizens, the arts sector and the private sector to improve development and encourage wider acceptance and adoption of the new sustainable materials in local and regional value chains. To do this, it will use open fabrication laboratories in the city of Zaragoza.
Our activities
– Coordinating the implementation of the Zaragoza demo site.- Helping to develop sustainable business models.- Helping to define social innovation models through multi-stakeholder engagement.- Taking part in the project’s communication and dissemination activities.- Building synergies with other related European projects.
