About the project
PLAN-B takes an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to better understand, and help reduce, the
impact of light and noise pollution on terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem services.
PLAN-B aims to find scientific evidence to support
effective regulation that protects Europe’s biodiversity and ecosystems
from the harmful effects of light and
noise pollution.
Global biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate,
and the decline is accelerating. Urban sprawl, population growth
and industrialisation bring with them drivers of biodiversity loss
that have so far gone unrecognised, such as light and noise pollution. The EU has adopted policies such as the EU Green
Deal and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 to enable
transformative change through better protection of
biodiversity and nature restoration activities. However,
current projections suggest that the EU’s 2030
biodiversity target will not be met, so an
alternative plan is needed.
Project objectives
The main results of PLAN-B include a framework and a supporting handbook for assessing the impacts of light and noise pollution to inform environmental decision-making; an open-access database on the impacts of light and noise on terrestrial biodiversity; models for assessing the impacts of noise and light on terrestrial biodiversity at European scale; and innovative solutions to prevent and mitigate the impacts of light and noise pollution.
The project will also draw up recommendations to improve the legal and policy framework so as to reduce the impact of light and noise pollution on terrestrial biodiversity, involving citizens through sustainable communities of practice (CoPs) made up of stakeholders concerned about the impact of this pollution on terrestrial biodiversity.
The role of Ibercivis
Fundación Ibercivis is part of the project’s European consortium. It will provide
technological solutions for running
citizen science campaigns and will coordinate the communication and dissemination of
the project’s activities and results.
Our activities
- Creating the project’s visual identity, including the logo, typefaces, graphic resources and a usage guide to be applied throughout the project.
- Designing the project’s communication plan for its four-year duration.
- Launching the Communities of Practice in the three pilot cities, where citizen science campaigns will be run to monitor light and noise pollution.
