Servet

Near-space exploration.

About the project

The experiments are designed and built by members of the public, who take the lead in setting and creating their own scientific challenge.

Servet is a science and outreach project in which near-space experiments are launched into the stratosphere on weather balloons. Throughout the project, members of the public and secondary schools propose their own experiments.

Servet runs several editions each year and is funded under the Scientific, Technological and Innovation Culture strand of FECYT’s call for grants to promote scientific, technological and innovation culture. It is coordinated with the I3A at the University of Zaragoza.

Project objectives

  • Through Servet, participants carry out every stage of a real stratospheric project, from choosing the mission objectives to designing the probe, integrating components, testing the system, preparing the launch and analysing the data. Throughout this process, students:
  • Learn in a hands-on way
  • Apply their knowledge to propose and develop innovative solutions to the challenges they face
  • Become familiar with research methods commonly used in real-life scientific and technical professions
  • Gain or strengthen basic knowledge of technology, physics, chemistry and programming
  • Build their social skills, seeing for themselves the importance of coordination and teamwork
  • Improve their communication skills
  • Develop self-criticism, creativity and motivation to learn

The role of Ibercivis

Servet is co-funded by FECYT and works with the Aragon Institute of Engineering Research (I3A-Unizar) and Zaragoza City Council through etopia_ centro de arte y tecnología.

Ibercivis supports schools as they develop their experiments, and designs and promotes the project on social media and in other media.

Our activities

Supporting the researcher with project coordination, communication, mentoring and monitoring of teams, and cross-cutting activities.

Organising the launch days, requesting project updates, booking venues and obtaining permits, finding a launch site, and contacting suppliers of materials and services.
