NASA Space Apps Challenge (Zaragoza)

NASA’s international hackathon in Zaragoza, where Ibercivis sponsored citizen science prizes

About the project

International Space Apps Challenge is an international event organised by NASA and held every year simultaneously in cities around the world, including Zaragoza. It is a hackathon: over a weekend, teams work to solve a challenge of their choice.

The challenges address global needs, on Earth and in space, ranging from space technology to human spaceflight, robotics and asteroids. They usually call for programming and design skills, but above all for an inspiring and original idea.

The role of Ibercivis

Fundación Ibercivis took part in the Zaragoza edition as a prize sponsor, with support from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and, later, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. In 2014 it offered a prize for the best citizen science project: Amazon vouchers worth 300 euros.

Our activities

  • 2014 (12 and 13 April): prize for the best citizen science project. The Socientize project, a partner of the event, awarded the prize to Open Curiosity, by a five-person team from Aragon, which went on to be a finalist in the NASA competition alongside 24 other projects from around the world.
  • 2015 (11 and 12 April, Etopia building): support for the event with help from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
  • 2022: sponsorship of the awards ceremony together with the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.
