D-NOSES

Citizen science and co-creation to make odour pollution visible

About the project

D-NOSES was a European project on odour pollution. Odours are the second most common cause of environmental complaints in Europe, after noise, yet environmental regulations barely take them into account. As a result, affected communities are often left unprotected.

The project set out to tackle this problem with citizen science and co-creation tools. Affected people could report odours in their area on a platform designed to be accessible to anyone. These data were used to build an odour map.

All the information would be published on the International Odour Observatory, which would bring together the results of the study.

The consortium brought together 15 partners from 9 countries: international associations, universities, SMEs, local authorities and public bodies. The project received €3,158,612 from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme and was presented in April 2018 at University College London (UCL).

Project objectives

  • Co-create an odour map from data provided by citizens.
  • Make all the information publicly available through the International Odour Observatory.
  • Work with affected communities, especially in Spain and across Europe.
  • Also involve local authorities, odour-emitting industries, non-governmental organisations and associations.
  • Produce a green paper on odour pollution, with recommendations for new policies and regulations.

The role of Ibercivis

Fundación Ibercivis coordinated the project. The principal investigator was Rosa Arias.

Our activities

  • Coordination of the European consortium from the kick-off meeting in London on 25 and 26 April 2018.
  • Presentation of the poster ‘Co-creating the International Odour Observatory’ at the 2nd International Conference of the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) in Geneva (2018).
  • Media outreach in Spain and Portugal, with interviews with Rosa Arias on Onda Cero and Aragón Radio.
  • Participation in the launch of the 2018 COTEC Report, which Rosa Arias attended as D-NOSES principal investigator.
