Ibercivis, the University of Deusto and Scicling welcome AmIAire2 with an online workshop that brought together up to 94 people

On Tuesday 27 October we held the online welcome workshop for AmIAire2, the project that measures air quality.

The session presented the second edition of the project, featured the experience of IES Palomeras-Vallecas and answered the questions of those registered.

AmIAire2 already has more than 200 registrations. To welcome this second edition, the University of Deusto, Ibercivis and Scicling organised an online workshop in which we explained how AmIAire works and answered questions from teachers and participants. The session peaked at 94 people connected at the same time.

Teachers gave the project a warm reception. Although the call is aimed at schools, anyone can take part individually and upload their measurements. All the information is on the individual participation page (in Spanish).

In addition, all the materials from the first edition needed to run the project in the classroom are now available in the teaching materials section of the website. They will, however, be updated over the coming months during this school year.

The experience of IES Palomeras-Vallecas

During the workshop, Abel Cabemas, a teacher at IES Palomeras-Vallecas, shared how his school experienced the first edition. He explained that they worked on particulate matter in the classroom using the project’s teaching materials and then monitored the area around the school. He also described how the project evolved over the school year and how they organised the measurement campaigns.

One of the most discussed points was the comparison of data. The school had its own dedicated sensors and found that its measurements matched those of another sensor they used during walks and those obtained with the AmIAire kit.

The work went beyond the 300 measurements taken with AmIAire sensors. Students and teachers produced a video and infographics, took part in a radio programme and attended an awards ceremony, where they received, among others, the “Vicente Ferrer” National Award from AECID.
