The study of the commons is a growing field of research that is highly relevant to fostering the sustainability of shared resources, including knowledge resources.Citizen science has great potential to constitute science as a knowledge commons, in which continued participation is essential for the long-term viability of inherently collaborative projects and the strengthening of communities. However, different motivations for participation can significantly influence continued engagement and, consequently, the sustainability of these projects. This research explores, first, participants’ motivations for joining and continuing projects, as well as the reasons for abandoning them. Secondly, we analyse the influence of various motivations on continuity, with a particular focus on highly committed participants—an aspect hitherto scarcely investigated. Specifically, we examine whether these participants’ motivations are primarily associated with general interests (e.g., resource sustainability) alongside personal interests (e.g., capability building). This approach aligns with the key finding of commons theory, which challenges the idea that rational behaviour implies only self-interest. The analyses of 478 responses to the survey designed for this study reveal that participants who sustain CS projects through continued participation are driven by a combination of personal and general interests. These findings reflect cooperative behaviours characteristic of individuals who create or maintain commons. Therefore, we propose that science can be understood as a commons that can be collaboratively and sustainably managed by multiple, decentralized communities. Consequently, fostering cooperation is essential for the effective management of shared resources, particularly in citizen science projects.

Enhancing our understanding of cooperation enables the better and more effective implementation of specific recommendations, such as optimizing communication among all those involved in citizen science projects and fostering awareness of common goals and collective achievements. In turn, this reinforces personal benefits, creating a virtuous circle that further strengthens cooperation and its benefits.

Abstract/Resumen

This paper explores how Citizen Observatories can  foster participatory, data-driven governance by actively engaging local communities in co-creating urban knowledge and contributing to evidence-based decision-making processes. Within the EU-funded Innovation Action GREENGAGE (HORIZON 2020), five innovative Citizen Observatories have been established as dynamic ecosystems where technology, citizen science, and policy intersect. These ecosystems empower local communities through interactive socio-technical methodologies and tools, enabling them to monitor environmental conditions, share insights, and collaboratively develop solutions to pressing urban issues. Hence, the creation of Citizen Observatories requires a strong focus on two dimensions: social (socio-economic and political context) and technical (digital tools and platforms). By bringing together citizens, scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders, GREENGAGE harnesses collective knowledge and expertise to co-create sustainable solutions. In GREENGAGE, Citizen Observatories are located in diverse geographical and social contexts: Bristol (UK), North Brabant (NL), Copenhagen (DK), Turano Valley (IT) and Gerace (IT). This paper highlights initial implementations carried out in these Observatories where local communities, further supported by the consortium members, were provided with skills for collecting valuable, community-sourced data from their neighborhoods using the provided tools. Citizens are involved as Citizen Observers throughout the onboarding, training, and implementation phases, contributing to environmental monitoring and urban
planning. The data that is currently being gathered will help directly address local urban challenges that are identified as the most critical by these communities, helping to resolve issues that resonate with local needs and concerns. Furthermore, the paper also illustrates how such initiatives have the potential to not only contribute to healthier, more sustainable urban  environments but also foster a culture of participatory governance, where citizens are co-creators of the cities they inhabit

Citizen observatories (COs) have emerged as essential research infrastructures for participatory science, supporting data collection and community engagement. They enable communities to monitor their environments, actively track indicators aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and contribute valuable data to scientific research and evidence-based, informed policy-making. Despite their growing importance, COs remain conceptually fluid, with varying interpretations across disciplines and contexts. This paper examines the evolution of COs from their origins in the early 2010s to their current multifaceted roles, revealing three key dimensions: descriptively as socio-technical systems, instrumentally as research infrastructures, and normatively as advanced participatory science initiatives. We specifically highlight the critical role of COs as research infrastructures and propose a set of essential functions and characteristics. These functions range from providing technical capabilities for data collection and quality assurance to social dimensions, including community building and governance frameworks. Additionally, our analysis identifies two operational models: tailored COs designed for specific projects and open COs supporting multiple initiatives. Reframing COs as research infrastructures rather than isolated initiatives emphasizes the need for long-term institutional support, shared services, and coordinated policies to ensure their sustainability and maximize their contribution to both scientific knowledge and public participation, ultimately strengthening the foundations of participatory science.

Citizen science projects offer an effective framework for increasing participants’ knowledge in specific scientific fields. They also play a crucial role in reshaping participants’ perspectives on the scientific process and attitudes towards science and environmental issues.

To ensure a significant increase in literacy, citizen science initiatives require meticulous design that extends beyond merely involving participants in scientific studies. This involves facilitating interactions with scientists and providing high-quality educational materials (Bonney et al., 2009).

Soil-focused citizen science initiatives only appeared after 2010. Their importance grew due to a broader societal context and, particularly in Europe, due to the increased attention to soil issues in public policy agendas (Panagos, 2022; Gascuel et al., 2023). They are supported by the EU Soil Strategy for 2030 and the Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ of Horizon Europe, which is one of the five Research and Innovation Missions to bring concrete solutions in response to major societal challenges, meeting global commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals. Consequently, using citizen science methods to improve soil literacy represents a relatively novel but well-established approach, highlighted by projects like ECHO.

ECHO stands out as the first citizen science project to focus on addressing the eight soil health indicators outlined in the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe,” therefore significantly advancing soil literacy.

This meticulously designed initiative not only prioritises citizens’ engagement, interactions, and educational materials, but also encourages proactive participation in data collection, discussions in both formal and informal settings, and addressing specific challenges as well as broader real-world issues. It introduces innovative approaches to cultivating a more inclusive scientific community by harnessing emotional engagement, social incentives, and structured participation frameworks.

Soil-related citizen science projects have gained significant interest driven by the prominence of soil within public policy agendas. Amongst others, this includes the EU Soil Strategy for 2030, which contributes to the objectives of the EU Green Deal and proposes specific actions to increase citizen engagement on soils. Increasing citizen engagement is also one of the building blocks in the EU Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe. In this work, we reviewed over 60 citizen science projects, across the globe, that considered soil health. We collected citizen science projects based on literature search, expert interviews, suggestions from project partners and through the mailing lists of the European Network for Soil Awareness (ENSA) and the European Soil Data Centre (ESDAC). We then screened all projects for the following characteristics: geographic coverage, duration, scientific factors (e.g. soil properties considered, fieldwork), technological factors (e.g. applications used) and their citizen engagement (e.g. target groups). Two-thirds of the reviewed studies were based in Europe and mostly conducted at regional- or national scales. We recommend to align the citizen science methodology with the desired level of participation. We also identified a need for the development of standardised, user-friendly and cost-effective methodologies to generate soil data. Engagement of citizen can be facilitated through, i.) providing feedback protocols on their scientific contribution and, ii.) assigning qualified mediators or activity leaders to support participants throughout the project. All collected information has been made available as an open-access repository and can inform future citizen-science projects on soil health.

Resumen

This report investigates the intricate interplay between drivers of changes in soil health and pressures and impacts on soil in the 32 European Environment Agency (EEA) member countries, along with six cooperating countries from the West Balkans, Ukraine and UK, shedding light on the multifaceted challenges facing soil conservation efforts. Our analysis shows the complex interactions among various factors, both anthropogenic and natural, shaping soil degradation processes and their subsequent consequences. We highlight key findings, including the significant impacts of soil degradation on agriculture, ecosystem resilience, water quality, biodiversity, and human health, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive soil management strategies. Moreover, our examination of citizen science initiatives underlines the importance of engaging the public in soil monitoring and conservation efforts. This work emphasises the policy relevance of promoting sustainable soil governance frameworks, supported by research, innovation, and robust soil monitoring schemes, to safeguard soil health and ensure the long-term resilience of ecosystems.

Resumen

Analysis of the impacts -i.e., changes and consequences, being direct or indirect, of our activities in citizen science- is essential to consolidate theoretical approaches and good practices, as well as to learn from misconceptions and failed outcomes and/or processes. In Spain, we have been working on this since at least 2016, through the Citizen Science Observatory, a collaborative project launched by the Ibercivis Foundation with co-funding from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). Since long before, Ibercivis and many different social agents have been working together to consolidate citizen science in and from the diverse territories in Spain. The objectives of ‘ImpactosCC’ –a one-year project (at least), with co-funding from FECYT-Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities– are, on the one hand, to facilitate self-awareness of all the impacts of each project, and on the other hand, to obtain a broad and detailed landscape of the impacts of citizen science in Spain. We will analyse the following impacts: (1) scientific-technological, (2) environmental, (3) socio-cultural, equality and equity, (4) economic, political, and governance. The project aims to be useful for people/communities/entities either working in citizen science or benefiting from its impacts. We seek to contribute to “making profitable” all the efforts made by and among all of us, as well as those yet to come, strengthening each other, reinforcing and creating cooperation networks, thus achieving an increasingly transformative, open, inclusive, and sustainable citizen science.

Abstract/Resumen

The implementation of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) presents a vast and intricate array of challenges, including the establishment of governance systems that engage all societal actors, particularly nongovernmental entities and youth, in proposing solutions and decision-making. This article investigates the potential of collective intelligence as a tool within citizen science to create solutions for SDG-related challenges and to establish or enhance necessary governance mechanisms. We detail a collective intelligence experiment conducted during the UN Climate Change Conference 2019 (COP25; Madrid, December 2–13), which aimed to generate a prioritised list of actions addressing SDG 6, Water and Sanitation and SDG 13, Climate Action. The experiment involved 1,253 students aged 15 to 17 who proposed, modified, and prioritised 14,517 ideas using an online platform created by Kampal, a spin-off of the University of Zaragoza. We discuss: a) participation protocols following citizen science methodologies; b) the platform description; c) results concerning the participation process, the tool’s effectiveness in collectively extracting the best solutions, and the quality of the generated proposals; and d) enhancements and new research directions for using citizen science and collective intelligence to tackle SDG-related challenges in a collaborative and participatory way.

Abstract/Resumen

NEWSERA is a project funded by the European Commission that analyses the complex and multidirectional science communication strategies by addressing the quadruple helix stakeholders in citizen science projects as the new paradigm for science communication. The aim of NEWSERA is to show the virtues of citizen science as an inclusive, broad and powerful science communication mechanism that can increase trust in science communication while opening up science and innovation to society, raising awareness and reducing the chances of incurring in fake news by means of promoting critical thinking. For this purpose, NEWSERA set up a series of workshops on communication for citizen science projects, the #CitSciComm Labs, that involve representatives from citizen science projects, science communicators, science and data journalists, quadruple helix stakeholders (citizens, academia scientists, policy makers, industries and SMEs): together they collaborate on new and improved strategies of communication to help citizen science projects reach different stakeholders and face new challenges, within the evolving relationship between science and society. Each Lab consists of a series of co-creation workshops that are being organised in Spain, Portugal and Italy, allowing for participation and mutual learning. Building trust among citizens and institutions is still a great challenge. In modern democracies, public institutions need to be close to citizens, to increase their legitimacy, accountability and good governance.In addition, there are many citizens who would like to be actively involved in the policymaking process. Increasingly, policy makers are turning towards citizen science as a way to engage with their citizens and gather evidence for science-informed policies, in order to face the 21 century challenges, including planetary health. In this poster, we will present the Policy Brief that has been developed after the second round of #CitSciComm Labs, addressing the challenges that citizen science initiatives may face when reaching out to Policy-Makers, as well as pinpointing innovative ideas to overcome difficulties and adapt to a changing science communication environment.
