Fundación Ibercivis collaborates with the University of Deusto and Scicling on a new edition of AmIAire, a citizen science initiative focused on air quality and sport monitoring.
The first edition of the project involved more than 1,000 students, who used low-cost sensors to measure air quality at different points across the country.
In the first edition, the University of Deusto developed an analysis platform where students uploaded photographs of the sensors, and the tool identified the pollutant particles retained on them to determine air quality. The data collected were displayed on an interactive map of Spain, open for public consultation. Teaching materials were also made available for classroom use, in Spain’s co-official languages and in an easy-to-read format.
AmIAire2 introduces several changes compared to the first edition: new materials for teachers, a more detailed analysis of possible sources of pollution, the inclusion of PM2.5 particles, more thorough treatment of data for both specific points and time ranges, and the addition of data from official reference stations. This last point makes it possible to compare the measurements taken by participating centres with official records and opens up new research questions.
The measurement map will keep expanding with the participation of educational centres, groups, associations and interested individuals, as the call is open to the public. Registration for the project is done through the AmIAire2 pre-registration form. Please note that the form and the project are currently only available in Spanish.
AmIAire2 is led by the University of Deusto, together with Fundación Ibercivis and Scicling, and is supported by the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología, under Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
