Catalogue of citizen science for environmental policy

A study and inventory of citizen science projects relevant to EU environmental policy

About the project

For centuries, the knowledge of amateurs has helped us better understand natural phenomena. Yet citizen science as a discipline has only emerged in recent decades, and it is growing fast. In environmental policy, the European Environment Agency highlighted its role as early as 2010, in the report Late lessons from early warnings.

Since then, several initiatives have been developed to promote the use of citizen science in environmental policy and in policy more generally. This six-month study was commissioned by the European Commission through tender ENV.A.3/ETU/2017/0035LV.

Project objectives

The aim was to take a further step towards integrating citizen science into EU environmental policy. To do this, the study analysed environmentally relevant citizen science projects in Europe and elsewhere in the world, compiled a comprehensive inventory and carried out an in-depth analysis for the European Commission.

The role of Ibercivis

Fundación Ibercivis carried out the study together with the company Bio Innovation Service (France) and the Natural History Museum, London (United Kingdom).

Our activities

  • Identification and analysis of environmentally relevant citizen science projects in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
  • Compilation of a comprehensive inventory of these projects.
  • A short questionnaire so that coordinators of and participants in projects linked to any stage of the environmental policy cycle could contribute information.
