COESO

Connecting research and society

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Coeso project is an effort to bridge collaboration between the European social sciences and humanities community and the citizen science community.

COESO has fostered the growth of citizen science in the social sciences and humanities through collaboration between the European academy and the citizen science community.

The project has analysed and described the barriers that have traditionally hindered the development of citizen science in the social sciences and humanities, mainly funding and the lack of methodologies for its implementation, and has worked to facilitate working spaces between all the actors involved.

It has also worked to understand the impact of citizen science methodologies on academic research in the social sciences and humanities.

Ten pilot projects have served to test the tools provided during the project to bring citizen science to areas such as philosophy, dance, journalism and history, among others.

In addition, COESO has produced a series of journalistic articles, its own podcast and has extensively documented the activity of its pilots to understand the reach of its activity in the academic and citizen science communities around Europe.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Coeso’s objective was to develop and sustain citizen science research in the social sciences and humanities.

It also aimed at the strong growth of citizen science projects in the social sciences and humanities and to support participatory research through a service-first approach.

IBERCIVIS’ ROLE

Participation in the organisation of the final conference of the project in Paris in October 2023: Connect – Collaborate – Create.

Support in the communication and dissemination of the project activities, both through the Ibercivis website and its social media profiles.

OUR ACTIVITIES

In addition, COESO addressed these specific challenges that block the development of citizen science in the social sciences and humanities by creating an overarching framework that:

  • Hosted citizen science pilot projects that reflect the variety of practices and methodological challenges in the social sciences and humanities.
  • Supported them with collaborative tools through a dedicated virtual ecosystem to target the funding streams needed to dramatically scale up citizen science in the social sciences and humanities.
  • Provided support and training to achieve citizen engagement in the social sciences and humanities through mutual learning.
  • Produced knowledge on citizen science co-creation practices in the social sciences and humanities through a rigorous protocol for assessing collaborative challenges in pilot projects.
