PROCOAST
A PROactive approach for COmmunities to enAble Societal Transformation
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project will reach regions in nine European countries affected by global warming or seasonal tourism.
A total of 20 European institutions from 14 countries are participating in the new PRO-Coast project to understand and support social transformation, environmental restoration and ecosystem services in coastal areas across Europe affected by risks such as global warming or seasonal tourism.
Social aspects – such as lifestyle, cultural values, or consumption habits – will be addressed. And environmental aspects will be addressed to involve local communities in informed citizen decision-making and in the formulation of local and European policies.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
- Gather and synthesise knowledge for citizens.
- Improve co-participation in community decision-making.
- Integrate local knowledge and decisions into high-level policy making.
- Promote adaptive management and foster the transformation of societies to improve the resilience of coastal ecosystems.
- Reverse biodiversity loss through meaningful change everywhere.
IBERCIVIS’ ROLE
Ibercivis is leading the coordination tasks in a set of 9 case studies, covering five European coastal regions: Comino (Malta), Apulia (Italy), Strunjan (Slovenia), Bocas de Kotor (Montenegro), Sligo (Ireland), Arne Parish (UK), Bergen (Norway), Kloogaranna (Estonia) and Corbu (Romania). Ibercivis will provide methodologies and tools for citizen participation, with the aim of evaluating these processes and providing evidence for scaling up large-scale conservation actions.
OUR ACTIVITIES
Study of starting points (mainly social and environmental indicators), co-design of methodologies to be applied in the pilots and mentoring in the different regions.
