Procoast

Supporting the transformation of societies to make coastal ecosystems more resilient.

About the project

The project will reach regions in nine European countries affected by global warming or seasonal tourism

A total of 20 European institutions from 14 countries are taking part in the new PRO-Coast project to understand and support

social transformation, environmental restoration and ecosystem services in coastal areas across Europe affected by risks such as global warming or seasonal tourism.

The project will work on social aspects – such as lifestyle, cultural

values and consumption habits – and environmental ones, to involve local communities in informed decision-making and in shaping local and

European policy.

Project objectives

  • Gather and summarise knowledge for citizens.
  • Improve shared participation in community decision-making.
  • Feed local knowledge and decisions into high-level policymaking.
  • Promote adaptive management and support the transformation of societies to make coastal ecosystems more resilient.
  • Reverse biodiversity loss through significant change everywhere.

The role of Ibercivis

Fundación Ibercivis leads the coordination of a set of 9 case studies covering Europe’s five coastal regions: Comino (Malta), Apulia (Italy), Strunjan (Slovenia), Bay of Kotor (Montenegro), Sligo (Ireland), Arne Parish (United Kingdom), Bergen (Norway), Kloogaranna (Estonia) and Corbu (Romania). Ibercivis will contribute citizen participation methods and tools, with the aim of evaluating these processes and providing evidence for scaling up conservation action.

Our activities

Baseline study (mainly social and environmental indicators), co-design of methods to apply in the pilots, and mentoring for the different regions.
