Socientize

A European project to promote citizen science and define its role in Europe

About the project

Socientize was a European project focused on citizen science and on the idea of society as an infrastructure for e-science, through technology, innovation and creativity.

The Socientize consortium coordinated a public consultation and debate on the role citizen science can play in Europe. As an interim result, in 2013 it published the Green Paper (Green Paper on Citizen Science), setting out the main topics for discussion and a first set of policy recommendations, later developed in a White Paper.

The project also developed Cell Spotting, a citizen science case study in cell biology: the analysis of cell images was shared out among many people over the internet (crowdsourcing).

Project objectives

  • Open a public debate on the role of citizen science in Europe and draw up policy recommendations.
  • Harness public participation to solve research problems, such as processing large volumes of data.
  • Bring citizen science into education, involving secondary school teachers and pupils in biotechnology research.

Our activities

Ibercivis’s publications catalogue includes these works linked to Socientize:

  • Green Paper on Citizen Science. Citizen science for Europe: towards a better society of empowered citizens and enhanced research (Socientize Consortium, 2013).
  • A case of citizen science for cell biology images analysis, presented at the 7th Brazilian e-Science Workshop (2013). Read the paper.
  • Cell images analysis as a case of citizen science for advanced education laboratory and school, back and forth, presented at the INTED conference (2013). Read the paper.
  • SOCIENTIZE, A Sociedade como infraestrutura para e-Ciência através da tecnologia, inovação e criatividade, oral presentation at the SciCom conference in Lisbon (2013).

The project’s two key reports, the Green Paper on Citizen Science (Socientize Consortium, 2013) and the White Paper on Citizen Science for Europe (Socientize Consortium, 2014), are both available in Documents.
