Zaragoza, el fútbol en e_volución
A citizen science project on collective memory, photography and archives
About the project
Zaragoza, el fútbol en e_volución (‘Zaragoza, football in e_volution’) combined an exhibition with a citizen science platform to recover the history of football in Zaragoza between 1900 and 1990.
The exhibition was on show at Etopia Centro de Arte y Tecnología from 2 February to 15 April 2023. It brought together photographs and press cuttings from the Zaragoza Municipal Archive, a selection of collectors’ items from Real Zaragoza (shirts, boots, season tickets, player cards…) and a corner where visitors could take part in the project.
The Municipal Archive holds more than 40,000 photographs of how the sport developed in the city. Many have no date, place or names. Through the platform, anyone could add what they knew about each image: the date, the stadium, the people in it…
Project objectives
- To complete the information on the Zaragoza Municipal Archive’s football photographs with the knowledge and memories of local people.
- To make the data collected available to everyone, in an accessible and open way.
- To raise awareness of the origins and development of football in Aragon as part of the city’s shared identity.
- To test a stable, open participation system so that groups, associations, individuals and researchers can launch their own participatory research projects.
The role of Ibercivis
Fundación Ibercivis developed the project’s online citizen science platform. Each task showed a photograph from the Municipal Archive and asked questions about it. Participants could fill in one field, several or none, and move on to the next.
For Ibercivis, the tool was a first step towards a system for taking part in citizen science projects that any group wishing to use participatory research in its initiatives could access.
