Identidades Comunes
National Meeting on Citizen Science, Social Sciences and Humanities
About the project
Identidades Comunes (‘Common Identities’) was the National Meeting on Citizen Science, Social Sciences and Humanities, the first of its kind in Spain. It was held in two editions at Etopia, Zaragoza’s Centre for Art and Technology: on 23 September 2021 and 20 September 2022.
The meeting brought together people who run citizen science projects, academic researchers and citizens, as well as the wider public. It was a shared space for exchanging knowledge and discussing the present and future of citizen science in the social sciences and humanities.
The projects presented covered a wide range of topics: the public perception of nursing, drought management, mental health, the risk of social exclusion, citizen innovation, climate change, migration, heritage and disinformation, among others.
The first edition brought together around thirty researchers and professionals. The second had more than fifty participants in person.
Project objectives
- Bring citizen science together with the social sciences and humanities in a single space.
- Showcase citizen science projects with diverse topics and methods.
- Encourage cooperation and co-creation between project managers, researchers and participants.
- Offer practical training on launching, communicating and funding citizen science projects.
The role of Ibercivis
Ibercivis organised both editions of the meeting together with Etopia (Zaragoza City Council) and the CESAR Labs at Etopia (University of Zaragoza). It handled the call for projects and the programme, moderated round tables and ran a project prototyping workshop.
The Ibercivis team also presented the meeting in a poster at the 4th International Conference of the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA), held in Berlin.
Our activities
- Organising two national meetings at Etopia (Zaragoza), in 2021 and 2022.
- An open call for projects to be presented in short talks and as posters.
- Keynote talks, such as the one by Eva Méndez (Carlos III University of Madrid) on open science in 2022.
- Round tables on producing knowledge “from the margins and from below”, developing bottom-up projects and digitising heritage with citizen science.
- Practical workshops on project communication, ethnography and prototyping, preserving collective memory and micro-funding.
- Live streaming of the talks on YouTube, which remained available to watch afterwards.
- Presentation of the meeting at the ECSA international conference in Berlin.
