AmIAire, a project on air quality measurement, publishes its policy brief with recommendations based on the results of its first edition

The citizen science project AmIAire publishes its public policy briefs, a document aimed at regional, municipal and national administrations with concrete proposals on environmental monitoring, mobility, urban planning and education.

The recommendations are based on evidence generated by more than 140 schools across 15 autonomous communities and on the evaluation questionnaires completed by participating teachers.

The document sets out five public policy briefs:

Expand the coverage of the air quality monitoring network by integrating citizen science data, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas with a limited presence of fixed monitoring stations.
Establish atmospheric protection zones around schools, with perimeters restricting access to motor vehicles during school hours and active mobility infrastructure.
Integrate citizen science on air quality into the school curriculum, with the activity recognized within STEM and environmental education competencies.
Create a mechanism for feeding results from citizen science projects back to participating communities, with defined deliverables set as an evaluable criterion in funding calls.
Protect and expand urban green cover as a strategy for mitigating air pollution, incorporating this obligation into municipal urban planning schemes.

Each brief sets out the context of the problem, the evidence generated by AmIAire, and a concrete recommendation aimed at the bodies with competence in each area, including environment, education and urban planning departments, municipal governments and science funding agencies.

About AmIAire

AmIAire is a citizen science project focused on air quality, in which primary and secondary school students build their own sensors out of cardstock and petroleum jelly to capture suspended particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, PM1). The samples are analysed using a digital image-processing platform developed specifically for the project. It is led by the Universidad de Deusto, together with Fundación Ibercivis and Scicling, with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

10 years of the Citizen Science Observatory in Spain: a tool at the service of participatory research

On 15 July 2026, the event celebrating the Observatory’s 10th anniversary was held, a unique opportunity to bring together researchers, project managers and participants in citizen science projects.

The event also served to present the new features of its online platform, a hub that brings together technology and society at the service of citizens and the research community.

Today, 15 July, we celebrated, in the Paraninfo’s Aula Magna at the Universidad de Zaragoza, ten years of the observatory managed by Ibercivis, which has served to weave a national network of initiatives, projects, resources, researchers, institutions and participants in citizen science projects. The event was chaired by our president and rector of the Universidad de Zaragoza, Rosa Bolea, and was also attended by María Jesús Lázaro, institutional delegate of CSIC Aragón. In her opening remarks, the rector highlighted the importance of citizen science within the university’s strategic plan and the milestone represented by the adoption of the online platform developed by Ibercivis by various European institutions, such as the European, Italian and Dutch citizen science associations and UNESCO, underscoring Ibercivis’s capacity for technological development.

New features to keep weaving networks and initiatives

Our director Francisco Sanz described the new features of the Observatory’s online platform, which turns it into a virtual hub for finding initiatives, resources, institutions and projects that use citizen science methodologies. Users have full control over the information shown about their project, along with a wide range of reports, statistics and metrics that allow for better management of their initiative. The platform pays particular attention to data ownership and the ethical use of the data it hosts, enabling comprehensive management of citizen science projects’ presence on the network, improving their visibility, and enabling collaboration between the research community and the public.

Success stories and a look to the future

This celebration event also featured Enrique Torres and Guillermo Orduña, who shared their experience within the SERVET Project — Enrique as part of the organizing committee, and Guillermo representing the participating community. We also enjoyed a dialogue on the future of citizen science between Fermín Serrano and Manuel González Bedia, Vice-Rector for Innovation, Transfer and Lifelong Learning at the Universidad de Zaragoza.

Classify Scientific Publications on Citizen Science

ABOUT THE PROJECT

CitSci Sort has a dual goal: Producing a research dataset and being a learning tool.

CitSci Sort is a community-driven classification tool developed by the Ibercivis Foundation in the context of the RIECS-Concept initiative — Towards a Pan-European Research Infrastructure for Excellent Citizen Science —, a 36-month Horizon Europe project bringing together 13 partners from 8 countries, with ECSA as scientific coordinator.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Its purpose is to build a systematically categorised corpus of peer-reviewed scientific abstracts on citizen science (CS) — one that did not previously exist with a shared, transparent classification scheme. The corpus is drawn from publications identified through a systematic search of the Web of Science database, accessed via the Universidad de Zaragoza’s institutional licence.

How does the classification work?

Step 1 — First-level Dichotomy
The first question is fundamental: does this paper use citizen science as a method to produce knowledge, or does it study citizen science as an object of research? Each abstract is assigned to one of three mutually exclusive categories: Scientific Findings (CS as method), Meta-research (CS as subject of study), or Not Sure.

Step 2 — Meta-research Aspects Classification (Only for Meta-research papers)
One or more aspects are selected to capture which specific dimension the paper analyses: methodology & design, data quality & validation, impact & outcomes, participation & engagement, ethics & legal issues, theory & framework, or technology & platforms. This scheme is grounded in Ioannidis et al. (2015) and the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science (2021).

Step 3 — Infrastructure Classification (For all papers)
Every abstract is also assessed for whether it mentions specific CS infrastructures — platforms, mobile apps, data-management tools, AI systems, or any other technology that enables or supports the described CS project. This step builds, directly from the published literature, a verified registry of CS infrastructures that RIECS-Concept needs to design the future pan-European research infrastructure.

HOW TO TAKE PART?

You do not need to be a researcher or a citizen science expert. The platform is designed so that anyone can classify abstracts by following the guidance provided. What matters most is reading carefully and applying the criteria consistently.

Each abstract is reviewed by multiple contributors, so the goal is not individual perfection but collective consistency. Disagreements are valuable — they help the research team identify the most ambiguous cases. Contributors may choose to remain fully anonymous or request public recognition in project reports, strictly according to their express consent.

How many scientific papers have been published on citizen science? What questions do they investigate? What platforms and technologies do they mention? We know the field has grown enormously over the past decades — but no systematically categorised corpus existed to demonstrate this with a shared, transparent classification scheme.

CitSci Sort was built to create that map — collaboratively, with the help of anyone who wants to contribute.

What is CitSci Sort?

CitSci Sort has a dual goal:

Producing a research dataset: a structured map of how CS is studied, practiced, and theorised across disciplines.
Being a learning tool: by reading and classifying real abstracts, contributors actively develop their own understanding of the CS publication landscape — what questions the field asks, how it frames them, and where the debates are.

How does the classification work?

Classification proceeds in three sequential steps, each grounded in published academic references.

Step 1 — First-level Dichotomy

Why does this matter?

Citizen science faces a structural challenge: fragmented data and a lack of shared standards. This lack of interoperability hinders the scalability of its collective scientific impact and poses a significant challenge to its long-term sustainability.

CitSci Sort responds by producing a shared, evidence-based taxonomy that makes the landscape of CS research legible. The data generated will feed directly into the design of a pan-European research infrastructure with a view to inclusion in the ESFRI roadmap and integration with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

Do I need to be an expert to contribute?

About the Ibercivis Foundation

Ibercivis (ibercivis.es) is a private non-profit foundation that promotes Citizen Science in Spain and Europe. Formally constituted on 14 November 2011 in Madrid, it evolved from the Zivis project launched in April 2007 — one of the earliest distributed volunteer computing initiatives in Spain. Its board of trustees includes the Universidad de Zaragoza, CSIC, CIEMAT, the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Government of Aragon, and the Fundación Zaragoza Ciudad del Conocimiento.Over its trajectory, Ibercivis has developed more than 100 citizen science projects across domains including environmental monitoring (Vigilantes del Aire, D-Noses), biodiversity (Pájaros en la Nube), and aerospace education (Proyecto Aeroespacial Servet, with ten editions). About RIECS-Concept

RIECS-Concept (concept.riecs.eu) is a 36-month Horizon Europe project that began on 1 January 2025. Its goal is to design the conceptual model for a permanent, pan-European research infrastructure for citizen science — including a feasibility study and a five-year implementation plan — with a view to inclusion in the ESFRI roadmap and interoperability with the EOSC. CitSci Sort specifically supports the WP4 public engagement activities within RIECS-Concept.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

People over the age of 18 who have had a Facebook or Instagram account for more than two years and use it regularly are eligible to participate.

Desenredados is a research project that studies how we behave online and offline, especially in relation to our personal networks. To do this:

Data is collected through a survey about your personal relationships.
In addition, participants are asked to provide information from their social media accounts such as Facebook and Instagram (owned by Meta).

With this information, we analyse what Meta knows about you, what kind of ads it shows you and why, and compare your real-life relationships with your digital ones. We also explore how personal networks vary across different cultures and social contexts.

PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Desenredados seeks to study how our personal networks evolve and how we interact with each other. Thanks to citizen science, Carlos III University collects information on how people are connected to each other and models it mathematically. The project also seeks to carry out a comparative analysis of how people are distributed according to different cultural dimensions and how the structures of their personal networks vary. Following the development of the research in other countries, the research team is seeking to expand the sample in Spain to complete the study.

IBERCIVIS’ ROLE

Ibercivis will carry out a communication campaign to publicise the project and encourage citizens to participate in the research. The campaign aims to get participants to complete the survey and securely share their social media profile data, such as Facebook and Instagram, with the research team.

Citizen science and sport in the classroom to monitor air quality and raise awareness of its environmental impact.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

In most European cities, air pollution levels exceed the threshold for protecting human health. Children are particularly sensitive to this reality, so it is important to ensure that their level of exposure is as low as possible.

AmIAire is a citizen science and action research project related to air quality monitoring.

Students will participate in the project with the aim of first-person monitoring of air quality in urban and rural areas. The data collected should be used by scientists and public administrations to improve particulate matter dispersion and deposition models or to create new mobility or urban planning policies.

The students will use a white cardboard paper with a layer of petroleum jelly on which the suspended particles will be stuck for a week in the open air.

The youngest students will observe with their eyes or with the help of magnifying glasses “how dirty” the paper is after seven days of exposure.

The secondary school students will use their mobile phones and software developed by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of DEUSTO to automatically recognise the levels of contamination from images taken with the paper sensors. These images will be geolocated to create a virtual map.

– To be able to make better informed decisions by public administrations and councils in terms of mobility and urban and rural environment.

IBERCIVIS’ ROLE

Scientific communication and visibility will be the responsibility of the Ibercivis Foundation for the promotion of citizen science. All the information and didactic material produced in the project will be written in easy reading, a method designed to make information accessible to people with reading comprehension difficulties.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The experiments are designed and built by the citizens, who take the initiative in setting and creating their own scientific challenge.

Servet is a scientific-divulgative project in which experiments are carried out close to space, launched by means of balloon probes into the stratosphere. During the course of this project, citizens and secondary schools propose their own experiment.

Servet, with several editions each year, is a project of the Scientific, Technological and Innovation Culture modality of the call for grants for the Promotion of Scientific, Technological and Innovation Culture FECYT. In coordination with the I3A of the University of Zaragoza.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Through the Servet project, participants carry out all the phases of a real stratospheric project, from the choice of the mission objectives to the design of the probe, the integration of components, the testing of the system, the preparation of the launch and the analysis of the data obtained. Throughout this process, the students:
– Learns in a practical way
– Apply knowledge to propose and develop innovative solutions to the challenges they are faced with
– Becomes familiar with research methodology, which is commonly used in real-life scientific and technical professions.
– Acquires and/or reinforces elementary knowledge of technology, physics, chemistry and programming
– Reinforces their social skills, realising the importance of coordination and teamwork.
– Strengthens their communicative skills
– Encourages their self-critical spirit, creativity and motivation to learn.

IBERCIVIS’ ROLE

Servet is co-funded by FECYT and collaborates with the Aragon Institute for Engineering Research (I3A-Unizar) and Zaragoza City Council through etopia_ art and technology centre.

Ibercivis’ role is to provide assistance to the educational centres for the development of their experiments, as well as to design and disseminate the project in social networks and other media.

OUR ACTIVITIES

Accompany the researcher in the coordination of the project, communication, tutoring and monitoring of teams and transversal activities.

Organising launch days, requesting project updates, arranging space reservations and permits, arranging the location of the launch, contacting suppliers of materials and services.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Students work in a practical way: they write news about scientific topics that interest them, interview scientists and share this content on social networks.

AulaCheck is a media literacy and critical thinking project to learn how to communicate science and distinguish between quality and reliable information and those that are not (fake news).

Students collaboratively create an online newspaper with news and dismantling science fakes. The project has already reached 30 secondary schools (3rd, 4th ESO and 1st Baccalaureate) across the country with the participation of hundreds of students. In an environment of much misinformation, especially on social networks, the project brings concepts such as sources or methodologies to the classroom.

It has the collaboration of FECYT, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology.

Ibercivis is responsible for organising and planning all phases of the project. From the selection of schools to the final event with the participation of science journalists. The Ibercivis team carries out training workshops for teachers with the help of the news verification agency Verificat. As a novelty in AulaCheck+, the educational impact of the project will be measured in collaboration with the University of Zaragoza.

Participate and contribute to know the quality of Spain's soils

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Vigilantes del Suelo will stimulate citizen participation in scientific activities to understand the health of the soil we walk on and to develop a national soil health map.

Vigilantes del Suelo is a national project that seeks to stimulate citizen participation in scientific activities related to the field of soil science, the science that studies soils.

Through citizen science campaigns, participants in Vigilantes del Suelo will collect soil samples from their surroundings, which they will analyse to determine their state of health. The results obtained in each area will be used to create a national map of the health of our soils.

Vigilantes del Suelo is aimed at the general public, with special interest for students and secondary school teachers. It will provide them with the tools to find out for themselves the state of soil health in their area.

Vigilantes del Suelo will provide participants with a kit for the collection and analysis of soil samples.

In addition, the results obtained can be stored and geopositioned through a mobile application that will help to create a map of the quality of our soils.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Vigilantes del Suelo project aims to produce a national map of the health of our soils through the data that will be collected through citizen science campaigns.

The objectives of Vigilantes del Suelo are aligned with those of the European ECHO project, an initiative in which the Ibercivis foundation also participates.

IBERCIVIS’ ROLE

We manage it together with the Centro de Investigación y Tecnología Agroalimentaria de Aragón (CITA), that is responsible for the more scientific aspects, and Ibercivis for those related to citizen science.

It is a joint project (FCT-22-18723) funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT)-Ministry of Science and Innovation, in its 2022 call.

OUR ACTIVITIES

Creation of a team of researchers and coordinators to manage the scientific, design and citizen science aspects. In addition, we will integrate in this team the ambassadors of the project, Spanish entities that will collaborate in the distribution of the kits to citizens in the different participating provinces.
Participation in the choice of the methodologies to be followed with the citizens, and of the elements that will make up the soil analysis kit.
Preparation of the graphic materials and the didactic guide of the project.
Creation of the citizen science app that will host the data and results provided by the participants of Vigilantes del Suelo.
Administrative management related to the purchase of the elements of the kit and its distribution to the ambassadors.
Carrying out workshops and webinars with the centres and people participating in the project to solve doubts and share experiences.
Follow-up of the whole process, in general. Sampling, how they provide the data, the conclusions that can be drawn from them, etc.
Analysis of the scope and impact of the project, with the subsequent drafting of the final reports.

Knowing the impacts of citizen science to strengthen it

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Knowledge of impacts – i.e. the changes and consequences that follow from an activity – is essential to consolidate good practices, as well as to learn from failed outcomes and/or processes.

ImpactosCC is a nationwide project aimed at finding out about the different impacts of citizen science projects developed in Spain.

In Spain, we have been working on this since at least 2016, through the Citizen Science Observatory, a collaborative project launched by the Ibercivis Foundation with co-funding from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). Since long before, many different social agents have been working together to consolidate citizen science in and from Spain. In these years we have observed that, sometimes, we may not be fully aware of the relevant impacts of our activity.

That is why we launched ‘ImpactosCC: knowing the impacts of citizen science to strengthen it’, a one-year project, co-funded by FECYT-Ministry of Science and Innovation.

PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The double objective of ImpactosCC is, on the one hand, to facilitate the knowledge of the impacts of each project, and on the other hand, to obtain a broad and as detailed as possible landscape of the impacts of citizen science in Spain and its various territories, useful for people/communities/entities working in citizen science, as well as for all those people/communities/entities concerned by the impacts of citizen science. We will analyse the following impacts:

(1) Scientific-technological.

(2) Environmental.

(3) Socio-cultural, equality and equity.

(4) Economic, political and governance. The project is approached with the conviction that all perspectives are necessary.

OUR ACTIVITIES

CC Impacts will officially start on 1 December 2023 and end on 31 November 2024. We already have a good amount of good information – obtained collaboratively during these years in multiple meetings, workshops, as well as information shared through the Observatory -, with tools that have been developed in the European and international citizen science community, and with ongoing collaborations with different institutions and communities.

The main tasks are summarised as:
(1) state-of-the-art elaboration and community building (decentralised yet harmonised),
(2) collection of information according to agreed upon criteria
(3) analysis of information and dissemination of results at local, regional, national and international levels.

IBERCIVIS’ ROLE

Although Ibercivis will coordinate the tasks as necessary, we want the project – and its resources – to be for everyone who wants to/can benefit and contribute.
