Projects, companies and institutions supported by the EC will present the outcomes emerging from the confluence of knowledge, creativity and innovation. Activities presented on 17-20 June in Barcelona include a stand, a workshop on open digital science and arts, and a live performance.

These activities are part of the Sónar+D, the international congress for creative industries organized by the Sónar festival. STARTS at Sónar is promoted, coordinated and supported by the Ibercivis Foundation.

Scientific and technological skills are not the only forces driving innovation. Creativity and the involvement of society play a major role in the innovation process and its endorsement by all. In this context, the Arts serve as catalysts in an efficient conversion of Science and Technology knowledge into novel products, services, and processes.

The constant appropriation of new technologies by artists allows them to go further in actively participating in society. By using ICT as their medium of expression, artists are able to prototype solutions, create new products and make new economic, social and business models. Additionally, by using traditional mediums of expression and considering the potentials of ICT, they propose new approaches to research and education.

Under H2020, the European Commission has launched STARTS to foster innovation through the emergence of joint activities between the artistic and the research communities.

STARTS is in line with a broader European innovation strategy aiming to enhance creativity in industry and society. In its Presidency conclusions on ‘cultural and creative cross-overs to stimulate innovation, economic sustainability and social inclusion’, the current Latvian presidency of the European Union emphasised the links between the Arts and innovation.

By presenting the STARTS programme at Sónar+D , we aim to promote the link between Science, Technology and the Arts in upcoming calls for funding and awards at European level.

During Sonar +D, STARTS will propose several experiments based on the collective participation and the collaboration between researchers, artists and the general public. Music and dance occupy a prominent role, dealing with new forms of knowledge of the human body and its interaction with technology. The project DANCE will run “Dancing in the Dark”, a series of demonstrations on the human behaviour through dance. Through sonification techniques of dancing properties, the audience will for example experience movement, energy or fluency. The project Citclops will present “Musical Tentacle” that sonifies and artistically expresses scientific data used to measure the transparency of the seawater. In the Sónar+D stage, BitBrain will monitor brain activity from the DJ Chelis and from the audience.

STARTS at Sonar+ D will also use the festival as a laboratory for new researches. The Open Digital Science project will use the stand and the workshop for its analysis work and researchers will conduct a process of foresight of future scenarios. Kampal will monitor in real time the impact on Twitter of different participants and artists present in Sónar and Sónar+D, Ciencia Remix, a citizen science lab coming from etopia_ will present the Collective Music Experiment, a virtual jam session for collective intelligence analysis, and the Open Curiosity, an open source exomars developed by Carlos Sicilia Til awarded by Socientize. Libelium will showcase some of their Arduino-based sensors to for the next generation of artists, like the radiation kit which will be used to play drum patterns. The Open Wetlab from the Waag Society will perform open workshops to promote bioart, by exploring drawing techniques with biomaterials.

The workshop on open digital science and arts will bring together several of the most silo-breaking initiatives of Europe like Ars Electronica FutureLab, Fundació la Caixa or Goteo. During two hours, participants will share experiences and visions to propose future actions in order to facilitate the integration of science and arts in Europe, enabling new innovations with higher scientific, cultural and economic impacts.
